MEMES ABOUT CULTURE

Description: When encountering another culture different from one’s own there are two perspectives that are simultaneously at play. There is the insider and outsider perspective; an individual will have an “insider” view on his or her culture. The various daily practices, the language, and the food eaten everyday will be considered normal to that person. However, once introduced to another culture that individual adopts an outsider’s perspective. The daily practices, language, and food of another culture can be seen as “odd” or “weird”, and in extreme cases even barbaric, especially when put into comparison with one’s own culture.

Description: There has been pushback over the years against “colonial mentality” and the resistance to Western influences or preferences in order to prioritize “true” Filipino culture. However, culture is not a static entity rather, it is dynamic and changes over time, especially with the contact of other cultures. Therefore, the idea of a “pure” or “original” Filipino culture is not only difficult to define but difficult to understand as well. Many staples of the Filipino culture that are enjoyed so much today did not originate from the Philippines. Adobo, one of the most popular Filipino dishes originated from Spain yet, it remains a part of the Filipino culture.

Description: Language is regarded as one of the key elements that comprise culture. It is often overlooked how complex and intricate the relationship of language to a culture is but also how it has changed over the millenia. When a “slang term” is said to another person or shared amongst a group of people or even an entire generation and its understood and used then that is language. Terms such as “Bitch” or “Fuck You” have become ways of expressing endearment towards another person and this is relatively understood by many people. The fact that we have seen these word be transformed from a form of insult to a term of endearment shows how fluid language is and how it is evolving with the times.

Description: There are preconceived notions about culture. It is a term that overtime has become closely associated with the concept of nationalism, which is a very encompassing and collective term in itself. What is forgotten or overlooked about culture is that is embodied in one’s everyday life; from the small daily routines to the food that is eaten, to the practices done and shared in communities that is already culture. Culture, rather being rigidly connected with “exotic” practices and assuming terms, is a person’s way of life lived each and every day.

Description: These meme exhibits one of the common misconceptions about what culture is. Often times, culture is exclusively construed with specific events (ex. tribal dances) or items (ex. national costumes). This mentality promotes the idea that culture is limited to exotic or “foreign” tribal practices. Viewing culture in this way promotes the idea that culture is something “out there” or almost foreign from our daily lives. Making these assumptions about what culture is ultimately fails to understand what culture is.

Description: This meme of cartoon character Arthur holding a clenched fist is meant to show an individual or a group’s reaction to an infuriating circumstance.
Different cultures have their own symbols that carry a deeper meaning for them. In this case, schools have their own mascot and in the context of the school’s culture, these mascots are symbols that represent the school and what it stands for. A bow and arrow are part of the symbol of a rival school therefore in the atenean perspective, it carries a different meaning compared to how someone who goes to school in London, for instance, would perceive it.

Description: Because we are aware of our respective country’s background, we tend to look at our culture from a colonial perspective. People may grow resentful towards the countries that colonized them thus there is a likelihood many lean towards the question of “how were we oppressed?” when going through history. However, it may be best to understand that our culture has evolved with the influences of other cultures. That being said, the more appropriate question to be asked may be “how have we adapted?”, as illustrated in the meme. Cultures are woven into what they are today with the help of many other cultures that influenced it throughout history.

Description: Many Filipinos tend to appreciate and desire western culture and some even look down on or ignore Filipino culture. In our culture this is a Filipino trait, which we refer to as colonial mentality. However, it can be said that we are looking at the American culture from an outsider’s point of view, thus finding it unique and fascinating whereas our own culture is taken for granted and considered ordinary. Illustrated in the meme through the man who seems to be more interested in another woman rather than his girlfriend.

Description: This meme shows a man who challenges people to discuss with him  somewhat unpopular opinions. People tend to view culture in a colonization perspective. This perspective resorts in many feeling that there is a need to preserve or “go back” to what they feel is their pure culture - before the external influences. This presents the belief among people that culture is something that should be the same over time. However, we should understand that it is in the nature of culture to be dynamic and to evolve.

Description: People tend to look at the world through their own lens which was forged by the influences of their culture. Ethnocentrism is when we evaluate other cultures according to the standards taken from our own culture. Ethnocentrism may lead to people feeling that their own culture is superior to others’. Thus, results in them making premature assumptions and dismissing other cultures in favor of their own.
