SA 21 FINAL GROUP PROJECT: MEMES

Filipinos deem English as the “superior” language; labelling anyone who speaks it fluently as either rich, educated, or smart. In our educational system, speaking in English than Filipino is more encouraged.

A common mistake on understanding culture would be that it stays the same all throughout when in truth it changes through time because of different aspects.

Ethnocentrism explains why certain communities find other cultures abnormal and, in some cases, offensive. It is because due to the other culture not meeting the norms and standards of their own.

Because culture is dynamic and systemic, it is wrong to say that our culture is in the past. The foundations, developments, and influences would be in the past but the current state is in the present.

Insiders of each culture often take their own culture for granted.  Since their everyday lives revolve around their own, they take more interest on cultures that are different from theirs

During interviews there is a notion of the use of the “proper language” in order to secure a better employment and a path to wealth and better status in society. The English language is what is deemed to be a superior language and thus deemed to be a “proper language” especially in interviews.

A danger of culture Ethnocentric is being dismissive towards cultures that are not the same as theirs. An example of this would be “superpower” countries like America like to impose their culture on other “lesser” countries. White people like to take credit for influencing cultures of other countries.

All aspects of culture interconnected and intertwined. If any part of culture changes, it also means that other parts of culture will change.

This meme shows the difference between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism. Ethnocentrism is where an individual judges another person’s culture based on their personal culture, while cultural relativism is where another culture is understood in an insider’s perspective, thus being the one favoured in the meme.

The UN promotes cultural relativism as it looks and understands each culture respectively based on their own circumstances and context, as they become the “middle-man” in the interaction of these different cultures. It is then a great challenge for the UN as it needs to decide which choice would be for the greater good.
