What do you like least about your family?

Final Project - Social Institutions

Section B

 Group A
 Baniqued - Capistrano - Cruz - Sanchez

In society, especially within the Filipino society, we do not speak of family as a social institution, moreover we are accustomed to viewing our family from the SI perspective of what family means to each individual. Because of this, we used the theme of family as a form of social control to formulate the question we asked our subjects. Our question "What do you like least about your family?" aims to show us and hopefully our subjects that we unconsciously bear with some of our family's undesirable traits because it is an institution we "should not" break free from. By tolerating their quirks we can see how we are socialized into the Filipino belief that family should always come first which can be seen as a form of social control. The subjects we chose vary in age, gender, and social status although they all live here in the Philippines. With this variety, we will be able to see if the tolerance for one's family is common to all generations and social classes. It will also show through the answers of the younger subjects at what age we are socialized into practicing this tolerance.

Overall, our respondents reflected what they were taught a family should be, in the form of what they like the least about their family. These ideas, such as ideas about equality in the family, degrees of power, expectations of each other, and such, are all a product of being socialized into social institutions. Basically, the meaning of a good family is a combination of all the ideas we learn from all the different agents of socialization, where this meaning is negotiated and changed based on the influence of these agents.

Looking at the responses, especially for the youth, their responses exhibit the existence of social conflict concepts within the family. It is seen that there is an inequality between family members, with power and authority mainly residing with the parents or older siblings. Adding to this, the concept of generational property can be seen in the responses.

However, we also see the influence of concepts related to the presentation of self, such as dramaturgy, in the responses. Majority of them are vague, simple, and some didn't even provide a definite or serious answer. With today's society, presenting ourselves in a positive and good image is considered to be acceptable compared to publicly speaking about the negative aspects of families. As a result, speaking ill of our families, [especially with the internet being involved with this activity] might be hard for people to do. In order to protect and keep an image, the responses are short, that seemingly withholds important and personal details, as well as their true answer.
