Are you satisfied with our government?

SA 21 Final Project

section B - Gun n' Roses

People seem to always have something to say about the Philippine government especially with the current issues our government is currently dealing with internationally, locally and even with the people inside the administration. In this project, we asked 20 different people of different age groups, genders and social statuses if they are satisfied with our government.

Question: Are you satisfied with our government?

One of the patterns we observed is that people who are older, especially those who are in the working class, have longer and more passionate answers regarding the current doings of the government than the teenagers talked to. There were many things that caught our attention when we were asking people if they were satisfied with what the government is doing presently, but the answer given to us by the lola we asked was rather interesting. We asked her, “Satisfied po ba kayo sa ginagawa ng gobyerno sa ngayon?”. We were expecting her to just respond with a flat “no” answer and rattle about the corruption in the government but instead she told me that when it comes to project development the government is doing okay but the corruption in the government is what’s making it look bad in the sight of its constituents.

An interesting answer we got was from a female adult with the alias “Leonora.” Since she said that she is working in government, she saw improvements from the works of the government. Younger interviewees just answered “No, because there is corruption” and “I don’t see any changes,” but we were also glad to know the point of view of someone who has experienced and seen the improvements and changes of the government. Since the younger interviewees hasn’t experienced much and maybe just heard it from the news, or since everyone just says that the government isn’t doing anything or is corrupt, which is why their answers are almost distinct from each other.

It was noticeable that the interest of a person can be seen in their answers. A young girl who wasn’t satisfied with the government joked that the main reason she wasn’t satisfied was because the internet speed of the country was slow compared to other countries, before answering corruption as her reason. Her first response can an effect from the visible importance young people give to the internet. The answers of two religious interviewees unquestionably reflected their spiritual side. The religious interviewees did not mention corruption. The freedom of religion was enough to be satisfied with the government. Their devotion to religion had an influence on how they judged the government. All three respondents showed how their age group, interest or faith can affect their standards for the government. As for the working class participants, they were both unsatisfied as the government is either corrupt or because the poor keep on multiplying. The parent participants both responded that they were not satisfied at all because of either lack of long-term perspective & corruption or the “hanggang salita lang” trait of the government officials. What’s interesting is that these parents are the parents of the female teen, where the female teen and the father had deep, elaborated answers while the mother had a brief answer yet insightful answer. What makes this interesting is that in their family, they do delve into politics and even talk about such social issues even when their children are young and thus having such response.

To summarize things up, there were 6 people who said that they were satisfied with their government, while 14 were not. Six of these were the two members of the upper class, the female working class, an adult female and both members of the religious society. The ones who said that they were satisfied said that they were happy because they had freedom of religion, transparency in all funds, “because of Noynoy’s efforts”, and because of feeling the change. What was interesting is that the female adult is a 50 year old of the government employee. It can be questionable that the adult female is satisfied maybe because she is feeling the benefits the government gives her or she may be really feeling the change. The 14 who said that they were unsatisfied had common answers, inadequate effort, lack of perspective and corruption. There are good sides and bad sides in the government. It can be concluded that those who have said that they are satisfied see more of the good side than the bad, while the unsatisfied see more of the bad side than the good. Another thing to be concluded about the government’s performance is that based on the numbers between satisfied and unsatisfied, they are underperforming.
