Breaching Experiment

1. In our breaching experiment, we violated the norm of taking pictures with popular people, specifically a UAAP basketball star. Usually, people ask popular people – celebrities, athletes, models, or the like – for pictures or autographs. In our case, we had one of our group-mates, Alfonzo Gotladera, a UAAP basketball star from the Ateneo Blue Eagles, go up to different people around campus and around katipunan to confidently say “Hey, I know you want to have a picture with me” or ask straightforwardly, "Do you want a picture with me?" This created an awkward situation where in the popular person himself was the one going up to people and confidently telling them that they wanted to have a picture with him. Our target was to see the reactions of people and determine whether people from school and outside campus actually knew who Fonzo was, if they found him arrogant or proud, or if they just found him scary.

2. To start off our breaching experiment, we met up in JSEC to properly distinguish roles and establish our plan of action. We wanted Fonzo to wear his jersey but he explained that he surrenders it after a game for proper storage as advised by the UAAP board. Because of that, we made sure that Fonzo wore a shirt that had a design related to the Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team. Hazel, Matthew, Anthea and Faisal were the camera men assigned while Kori was Fonzo’s accomplice for the act.

We went around JSEC, Sec-walk, Zen Garden, and Regis Building outside of Ateneo to perform the experiment. The camera-men used phones and an SLR and hid it as much as possible while taking the videos. The camera-men setup first in the certain spots with possible targets and then Fonzo and Kori would follow to perform the act. Fons’ exact lines were “Hey I know you want to have a picture with me.” After the reaction of the people, Fonzo would just walk away and Kori would confront the targets to ask them what happened and see their reactions. After which, Kori would explain that it was a breaching experiment and asked permission if the group could use their video for the project.

3. As the group planned this experiment, there was no doubt that the members expected there to be a handful of different reactions. But the constant idea in the expectations is that they will be slightly confused or dumbstruck because of the whole situation. After all, this experiment aims to observe the response of the people to a certain situation that is not ordinary and usually deviated from the norms in the society.

The experiment resulted to various reactions from the people who were tested on.  Although everyone ended up taking a picture with him, all of the people felt hesitant when responding to Alfonzo. They did not immediately accept the offer of Alfonzo and thought twice about reacting to it. There was an obvious sign of confusion, worry, and doubt seen on the expression of the people. When asked about what they thought about the event that just happened, the answer that was always given was “I don’t know” or that they were very confused about it. A factor that affected the results, although only a little, was if the person knew who Alfonzo was. Those who knew him took less amount of time agreeing to the picture compared to those who don’t know him. The people who didn’t know who he was also mentioned the feeling of fear when Alfonzo approached. This reaction is due to the intimidating height and physical attributes of Alfonzo.

The existing norm was people ask popular people such as celebrities and athletes for pictures or autographs. But instead, the experiment put them in an opposite situation. The deviant act was seen when the celebrity approached them and stated that they wanted a picture with him. The deviant act in the experiment obviously reaffirmed or confirmed the existing norm based on the reactions. This can be said because these reactions mainly occur when one steps out of what is ordinary and does an action that deviates from the norms. The hesitancy and fear to respond that were felt by the people being tested on was due to the fact that it was not normal for people to approach people and ask them or tell them “I know you want a picture with me.” The deviant act put them in a situation that they were not used to so they did not know what to think of the situation. For example, it was not normal for people to approach random people and ask if they want a picture with them. It was an event that they did not encounter yet. Thus, they instantly had doubts about what was happening and were having second thoughts when it came to their response or feelings.

4. Based on the results of our experiment, we have found that aside from the norms, the age of the participants affected the way in which they reacted to a well-known basketball player asking for a picture with them. For instance, only two of our subjects were of an age above that of a college student. It was noted that both of them failed to recognize him as Alfonzo Gotladera, but they understood that he was a basketball player. Despite their initial confusion, both of these subjects timidly agreed to have their pictures taken. For the subjects whose ages were within the range of students, they likewise agreed to take a picture, the only difference being that most of them were able to recognize Alfonzo. This had a slight effect on their response to the deviance, as most of these students were more reactive (i.e., smiling, laughing, acting surprised) whereas the elder subjects were quite unreactive. Some Ateneans were even able to detect right away that they were being tested in a Sociology and Anthropology experiment.

5. Initially, all of us, especially Fonzo, felt hesitant given that we were about to deviate from the norm, which is something that we do not do everyday. But, in spite of this hesitation, we were all determined to do it. When we started conducting the experiment, we were all clueless and embarrassed since Fonzo has never really approached random people for pictures, and the rest of us have never tried videoing inconspicuously. So whenever Fonzo approaches someone, it was obvious that something was up, and that they were being recorded for it. Also, when some of our friends were in the areas where we conducted the experiments, we could not help but feel embarrassed and hesitant since we were doing something that deviates from the norm. But as soon as we got the hang of things, the breaching experiment was fun and entertaining for the most part, especially when people initially rejected his offer for taking a picture. It was very interesting to see the reactions of people.

6. Other observations we noticed were the reactions of the people that were around us when we were filming these events. Mostly, people ignored us, some were also confused at what we were doing, and a few were laughing at what Alfonzo was doing. This shows the effects of doing a deviant act towards our surroundings. This shows how people respond to deviant acts, and through this, clarify moral boundaries. The observers of the experiment were able to clarify the moral boundaries through their reactions. We were able to see how their confusion and laughter signified that something unusual was happening.

Below is the link to the video compilation of the people Alfonzo Gotladera approached:

(Disclaimer: The initial reactions of the people are not evident in the video seen since the group had to record discreetly).
